Contains photographs of the following military units: 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment; 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. General description of the collection: The Samuel M. Whitside photograph collection consists of mostly portrait photographs of Samuel Marmaduke Whitside from 1885 (when he was a Major with the 7th U.S. Cavalry) to Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1902 (when he was Commanding General, District of Santiago, Cuba). In an 1885 photo, he is pictured with other 7th Cavalry officers in front of a tent in South Dakota. There are two excellent photos of Colonel Whitside in his office in Cuba, which show the various items on his desk, along with two others of Colonel Whitside and his staff in Cuba. One of the officers is his son, Lieutenant Warren Webster Whitside. There are also three photos of his wife.

Whitside entered the U.S. Army in 1858 and was in 6th Cavalry till 1861. Promoted to Captain (1866), Major, 7th Cavalry (1885), Lt. Colonel, 3rd Cavalry (1895), Colonel, 10th Cavalry (1898), Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers (1901). Reverted to Colonel, 10th Cavalry and became Brigadier General, U.S. Army, (1902).
